Why I’m doing this whole “Blog” thing

For my first blog post, I wanted to talk a little bit about why I started a blog, what I am hoping to accomplish, and the types of posts you’ll be seeing on here.

Why I’m here

I suppose it would be wise to introduce myself a bit first. My name is Tessa Rose and I’m a twenty-something aspiring author. I’ve been writing for ten-ish years and making up stories my entire life. For more info about me, check out my About Me page.

I started this site up to chronicle my journey from writing to publishing, as well as share some tips and advice that I’ve found helpful along the way. If there’s one thing I’m passionate about, it’s telling stories and telling stories well. Above all else, I would like this site to be a place to discuss not just the writing process, but the process of storytelling.

What I want to do

This blog is also a way for me to hone my own writing– since I am a perfectionist I tend to look everything over a million-and-a-half times– and I’m hoping that a platform like this one will help me be a little more free with my thoughts. In addition, I’m hoping that these blog posts will help me gain more flexibility as a writer, since so far I have stuck religiously to fiction.

As for posts, most of them are likely to be about the whole “writing” deal. Why I write, where I write, how I write, and what I’ve learned from writing every day for ten years or so. Hopefully it will be helpful, but not, at least interesting. I’ll also post updates on my own writing; I’m hoping to self-publish my first novel by the end of next year and if you’re curious about what it’s like to go through the process for the first time, these posts will be for you. From time to time, I’ll also post things like movie reviews or short stories. Everything will be on the theme of celebrating storytelling.

To conclude:

The very least you can do in your life is figure out what you hope for. And the most you can do is live inside that hope. Not admire it from a distance but live right in it, under its roof.    — Barbara Kingsolver

I have that quote written up on my wall and I look at it every day, because I believe that figuring out what you want in life and then going after that thing with everything you’ve got is the most important thing you can do for yourself. Maybe what you want to do will change at some point, but the point is that you always keep that thing in mind. Give yourself something to look forward to, a community to be a part of, and a goal which gives you something to fill your time.

That’s all for now. In the meantime, go enjoy a good story, make something cool, and have a great day.
