Back by popular demand, here's a brief listing of the Official I4SL Rules, followed by the anything-but-brief downloadable Official 2006 International 4-Square League Rulebook. Rejoice!
--The Basics--
The player in Square 4 serves the ball to Square 1. The ball is then bounced from square to square until...
A) The ball is either hit out of bounds (result:the hitter is out)
B) The receiver cannot return the ball before it bounces a second time (result: the receiver is out)
Once the player who is "out" leaves the court, players rotate positions towards Square 4 and play begins again.
--The Specifics--
The basic court measures 20'x20'. It is divided into fourths to make four 10'x10' squares. A 40'x40' square is drawn around the court (creating the Spike Zone). A line is drawn in Square 4 connecting the points 5 feet down each outside line. A box is drawn in Square 1 connecting each line's midpoint. A circle roughly the diameter of the ball is drawn where the center lines intersect. It looks like this…
To begin, the player in Square 4 bounces the ball in the triangle behind the diagonal line in the back corner of their square. Using an underhand serve, the server then bounces the ball fully within the "Service Square" (the diagonal box) in Square 1. The player in Square 1 then must hit the ball to either Square 2 or Square 3, but not back to Square 4. Once the player in Square 1 successfully puts the ball in play, any player may hit the ball into the bounds of any other square.
Play continues until one of these things happens:
A) A player hits the ball out of bounds
-"Out of bounds" includes the exterior of the court, the interior lines of the court and the circle in the center of the court (to avoid confusion). It also includes Spike Zone violations (once a ball lands in a square, its second bounce must land within the Spike Zone or the hitter has hit the ball too hard and is out).
B) A player is unable to return a ball that lands in their square
Both of these events result in the player being declared "out" and having to leave the court. Remaining players then rotate up and a new player enters in Square 1.
--Objective--
The basic objective in Tournament Play 4-Square is to gain points by advancing to Square 4 and then retaining service. (Example: The Server hits the ball out of bounds. He leaves the court and is replaced by Vicky in Square 3. Vicky receives one point for advancing to Square 4. She serves the ball and eventually the player in Square 2 hits the ball out of bounds. Vicky receives another point for staying in Square 4.)
